Track Name: Ancestor
history's dripping
from the worlds under my eyes
building a song across the oceans
of the colonized
I can't say I'm aching
but the past's reverberating
and I'm singing in a language
that denies its own erasing
I write it in the margins
what I can't quite say aloud
it won't be forgotten
but it won't be heard right now
my ancestors echo
in every song unsung
their names embedded in my skin
fuel me when I strum
I fall in love with all of these souls when they say
our spirit will surround you if you lead yourself astray
and ladybugs are lacing my lungs every time
I summon the smell of her cells upon mine
I trace her letters for so long
the ink sinks into my fingers
seems like she's always been gone
still she's feeding me her splinters
Track Name: Honesty
snow is sifting through the East coast
frozen cold just like the lakes
remember when you'd sing me to sleep?
your voice like tinsel cut snowflakes
you flew across the Indian Ocean,
your wrist it was golden,
for a white and frosty land
the English language settled through you
just as the cracks formed in your hands
I'm not sorry for who I am
but I'm sorry if it cost you any sleep
we were starting to feel like a hologram
it was a secret I just couldn't keep
cloths that stretch for yards
sweep up my broken shards
even when I'm razor sharp
you hold me in your arms
hymns that ring for days
the crease of concern on your face
you use your fingertips to trace the turns I take
I'm not sorry for things I've done
but I'm sorry if they mark your face with worry
paint a new picture of personal dreams begun
no matter your lenses, future is blurry
the smell of your pillow is home
my glow is from your chromosome
spice menagerie
rinsing raspberries
things are the same still I swear
you know the truth now is all
you can still French braid my hair
still grab my hand when I fall
I'm not sorry for who I am
but I'm sorry if my honesty was lost
my body emerged from a nest in the palm of your hands
your heart is a home where we hide from the frost
Track Name: Invocation
your fireflies of freckles
constellate my sighs
holy pinpricked particles
illuminate my lies
in all the times I've liquefied
I've melted most for you
by you I mean the mirrors in your eyes
they promise me what's true
oh ghost of my imaginary lovers
help me get it right this time
encircle me with dreams of our contingent hearts
might my mirror match her rhyme
I recognized me recently
in the crinkle of a wave begotten book
as I dove inside its careful paper edges
I remembered how I looked
my rumination corner of the yellow basement
where I pine for the impossible
with every phantom angel gone, a new replacement
deposit inexhaustible
oh ghost of my imaginary lovers
help me get it right this time
encircle me with dreams of our contingent hearts
might my mirror match her rhyme
